No worries. It was he "not worth starting" bit that worried me because as Shaun says with wikis particularly you can have impact from the word go.

Sorry for misquoting you Euan. I remember that many of my colleagues had not even heard of wikis when I spoke to you all those years ago. Now that has certainly changed. It's good to hear you say that it is getting a lot easier as more people take this sort of technology for granted.

I thoroughly believe that if you build a sharing space for a any group and give them as wide access (make, delete, share, edit) as possible amazing stuff happens from day one. Suddenly the knowledge locked within individuals and teams becomes accessible to everyone and fully searchable. One person has a slightly better/faster/more effective way of doing something? Suddenly everyone is doing it that way, and what's more someone else might tweak it a little or point out an even simpler way of doing it. Everyone has an unwritten novel in them. A wiki harnesses that creative instinct in a hugely useful way. I've found that some people automatically fill the role of content creators, others of reviews and others of editors. It's incredible, but it works.

Not sure I actually said it was pointless but the systems were limited in their impact and their ability to self regulate until we got a representative enough percentage of the population using them. In fact in the seven years since we put our tools in they have grown to, in one case, be used by 90% of BBC staff. This isn't to say that small groups can't find their uses, especially for wikis and certainly it is getting a lot easier as more of the workforce take this sort of stuff for granted
